COUNSELLING - CBT -EMDR - MASSAGE
The BACP define counselling as taking place when as when a counsellor sees a client in a private and confidential setting to explore a difficulty the client is having, distress they may be experiencing or perhaps the person's dissatisfaction in life or loss of sense of direction and purpose.
By listening very carefully and in a non-judgemental way, the counsellor can begin to understand the difficulties from your point of view and can help you see things more clearly.
You can explore various aspects of your life and feelings, talking about them confidentially in a way that is rarely possible with family and friends.
You will have the opportunity to explore suppressed and intense feelings and possibly understand them better. The counsellor may help you examine in depth issues or situations that are problematic for you, and to find a possible way to initiate change.
Confidentiality is exceptionally important. The degree of confidentiality offered reflects this. In general terms, anything you say to your therapist will remain confidential. However, very occasionally the law requires confidentiality to be broken. These circumstances will be explained to you prior to the commencement of counselling. All professional counsellors have "clinical supervision" to discuss the work being done. Your circumstances may be discussed in confidence. This process is done to ensure the care and well-being of the person attending counselling and all professional counsellors engage in clinical supervision. Your identity will be kept confidential
Ask your counsellor about his/her experience and if he/she is an accredited member of their professional organisation.
Finally meet with your potential counsellor before committing to appointments to see if you feel comfortable working with him or her.
